    How does kelly bar work ?

     

    1. Structure and Functionality
    A Kelly bar is made up of multiple telescoping segments that can slide within one another. These sections are typically three to five in number, allowing the bar to extend as drilling progresses. There are two main types of Kelly bars:
    -Friction Kelly Bar: Utilizes friction between the segments to transfer torque.
    -Interlocking Kelly Bar: Employs mechanical connectors to securely lock the segments together, providing a higher torque capacity.

     

    2. Operational Process
    -Torque Transmission: The rotary drive of the drilling rig rotates the Kelly bar, which then transmits this rotational force down its length to the attached drilling tool. This rotation enables the tool to penetrate and cut through the ground.
    - Extension and Retraction: As the drill advances deeper into the ground, the Kelly bar's sections extend to maintain the connection with the drilling tool. When the drill tool needs to be withdrawn, the Kelly bar retracts, section by section, lifting the tool out of the borehole.

    3.Drilling Process
    - Initiating Drilling: The Kelly bar begins in its fully retracted state. As drilling commences, the bar rotates and extends, driving the tool into the ground.
    - Deepening the Borehole: As the borehole deepens, the Kelly bar continues to extend, ensuring consistent torque and pressure application throughout the drilling process.
    - Withdrawing the Tool: When the desired depth is reached, or the tool needs to be emptied or changed, the Kelly bar retracts, lifting the tool out of the hole.
    - **Repeating the Cycle**: This cycle is repeated, with the Kelly bar extending and retracting as necessary, until the borehole is completed to the required depth.
